Airbnb opens Madrid Ex­pe­ri­ences and plans Sevilla in­au­gu­ra­tion by year end

NEW Staff Re­porter IN ITS bid to take on the tourism in­dus­try, home­rentals gi­ant Airbnb is ex­pand­ing its trips pro­gramme - ex­cur­sions and ex­pe­ri­ences hosted by lo­cals - to in­clude Madrid and, later this year, Sevilla. It has been avail­able in Barcelona since last year.

Madrid is the 36th city to be in­cluded on the Airbnb plat­form, which al­lows tourists to plan en­tire trips through the one site. Spain’s cap­i­tal cur­rently of­fers some 40 ex­pe­ri­ences, av­er­ag­ing a cost of 44 eu­ros each.

Glo­ria Molins, head of Trips’ global ex­pan­sión for Airbnb, ex­plained that the idea, mar­keted as ‘the magic is in the peo­ple’, is to give tourists a lo­cal in­sight into any num­ber of in­ter­ests, from off-route hik­ing to paella cook­ing classes or neigh­bour­hood tours while at the same time al­low­ing “lo­cal peo­ple to ded­i­cate them­selves to their pas­sion or in­ter­est while earn­ing some ex­tra money.”

On the thorny sub­ject of hol­i­day rentals in some cities, Molins recog­nised that “there are some peo­ple who agree [with them], and oth­ers who don’t.”
