NEWS Staff Reporter REGIONAL director for health in Murcia, José Carlos Vicente has asked the Ministry of Health in Madrid to work on a standard law to cover tattoo and piercing studios, so that all regions in Spain have the same legislation.

Sr Vicente pointed out that professional and health requirements to open and run a tattoo studio and to work as a tattooist should be the same throughout the country. He noted that the only authorised tattoo ink was the one permitted by the national medicine agency, but other requirements were different in each region.

“In some regions the opening licences are issued by town halls, and in others by regional governments, and there are huge differences in the professional and health requirements,” he noted, going on to say it is important these professionals adhere to strict training standards and sanitary guidelines.

He said that serious infections and diseases could be spread by unqualified tattooists and illegal tattoo and piercing studios.
