Population shift figures revealed
By Joe Wickman THERE have been more deaths than births in the Valencia region for second consecutive year, according to figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INE) late last week.
Data issued suggests that there is a worrying trend of negative natural growth, as 674 more people passed away than were born in 2016, adding to the population loss experienced the year before.
Furthermore, the 41,836 babies born in the region in 2016 represent a 3.7 per cent decrease compared to 2015, the third largest drop in the country – only behind Castilla y León (-4.3%) and Aragón (3.8%).
The positive note is that there have also been 1,841 less deaths than last year.
These figures are consistent with those registered in the country as a whole, where the net growth came in at a negative 259, the number of births decreased by 2.8 per cent, and the number of deaths dropped by 3.2%.
