Car thief caught
Gandia police have arrested a 32-year-old Spaniard who broke into three parked vehicles before fleeing in a car he had stolen about 600 kilometres away.
He was seen by a resident as he forced the lock of a parked car and, when officers got there, they saw him driving around with his lights off.
He switched them on when he realised he had been spotted and fled at great speed, driving along pavements and forcing other cars to brake and swerve.
In attempting an illegal Uturn on a main road, he crashed into the central reservation, dumped the car and took off on foot.
Police caught up with him on a grass verge, and one officer was injured in the ' extremely violent' struggle that ensued, the force reveals.
They found out the getaway car had been stolen in the city of Salamanca, halfway between Madrid and the Portuguese border, even though the thief is a local man.
The accused has an extensive criminal record, police say.
