Driverless car rolls onto A-31 motorway from petrol station
By Dave Jones A MOTORIST had the shock of his life as he watched his car roll away to the A-31 motorway as he paid for his fuel at a service station in Monforte del Cid.
The emergency services sus- pect that the driver had forgotten to secure the handbrake and his vehicle ran down the slope to the busy highway which was full of traffic at 13.00 on Monday.
The petrol station is situated just off the motorway – close to the border with the municipality of Novelda – at kilometre 216 of the road which links Alicante with the capital.
An HGV which was travelling in the slow lane towards Madrid smashed into the unmanned car and shunted it into a ditch next to the hard shoulder. Fortunately no one was injured in the incident, although long tailbacks were registered as Guardia Civil traffic officers arrived to deal with the collision.
Firemen from the Vinalopó brigade also arrived at the scene as a precaution, but their services were not needed as the officers had established that no one was trapped inside the vehicle. The incident is under investigation by the traffic police.
