Doc­u­ments dat­ing from De­cem­ber 1940, re­cently de­clas­si­fied by the UK’s Na­tional Ar­chive, sug­gest that the Ger­man com­mu­nity in the Ca­nary Is­lands may have been work­ing with Hitler to stage a coup.

The ac­tion would have given Ger­many a strate­gic foothold for At­lantic op­er­a­tions. Spain was of­fi­cially neu­tral in World War II but the Bri­tish gov­ern­ment noted “sig­nif­i­cant mil­i­tary ac­tiv­ity” on the is­lands.
