Arrests over botched extortion
Three Spaniards who allegedly tried to extort money out of a well-known businessman in Elche have been arrested.
A National Police spokesman said three men had gone to the victim’s place of work and demanded money in payment for a shipment of drugs. The businessman claimed he had no idea what they were talking about and told them they had got the wrong person.
The men became aggressive and threatened to kill him and his family but the victim managed to buy time by saying he would pay but could not get the cash until the next day.
In the meantime he went to the police station to report what had happened and while he was there one of his employees telephoned to say one of the men had returned demanding the money again.
Officers from the specialised violent crime unit accompanied him back, where the victim identified the suspect in person and as a result the officers were able to arrest all three of them.
