Iconic site in Calpe begins facelift
By Jo Pugh THE REGENERATION of an area in Calpe surrounding the iconic architectural work of Ricardo Bofill, La Muralla Roja, has commenced.
The project, costing €469,050, includes widening pavements to a minimum of 1.5 metres, new street lighting, and the construction of two green spaces for public use, currently used as car parks.
Built in the 1970’s, the eyecatching apartment block needs to conform to newer ac- cessibility laws, together with health and safety reforms.
The area is an historic part of Mediterranean history from an architectural point of view, and therefore Calpe town hall is not only working on the restoration of the urbanisation, but also wishes to rebuild the old social club, located at the base of the cliffs, and build a walkway from Cala Manzanera to enable disabled visitors access to an eye-catching part of history.
