Robotic operations arrive to Valencia
By Joe Wickman THE FIRST operation performed with the help of a Da Vinci robotic arm in the Valencia region took place late last week.
Valencia’s Hospital General has the honour of pioneering the technique, whereby the surgeon sits in an adjacent room, controlling the robotic arm with the help of two ‘joysticks’ and a pedal while watching the procedure through the images sent from a camera installed on the robot.
This method allows for more precise minimally-invasive surgery such as laparoscopic procedures.
The Da Vinci will be tested for six months in the Hospital General as part of an ongoing investigative project aimed at evaluating the machine’s cost-efficiency ratio.
