Honouring the 'Marina Alta 52'
Tributes were held across the Marina Alta on Sunday to 52 Republicans from the area who were shot dead en masse towards the end of the Civil War when fighting against dictator General Franco's men.
Pego, Pedreguer and Dénia have been holding memorial services for the martyrs for the last 15 years to ensure those who gave their lives in defending Spain's freedom are never forgotten.
One of the most prominent leaders of the campaign – spearheaded by Marina Alta Socialists and the association Vent de Progrés ('Wind of Progress') - was Pedreguer's exmayor Vicent Costa, who recently passed away and who always insisted that ' silence is the cancer of Spanish democracy'.
The 52 Republicans were lined up against the wall of Dénia cemetery and slaughtered by a Francoist firing squad 78 years ago in the final weeks of the war.
