Locker thief caught
Santa Pola Guardia Civil have caught a 29-year-old Spaniard who was breaking into lockers at an Elche gym.
The thief, who also used the gym, made copies of locker keys to later steal money from the lockers.
Officers began investigating in August, after receiving complaints of money going missing from lockers in an Elche campsite gym.
The thefts were carried out at the height of the holiday season, when the gym had more people using it. The sheer amount of users complicated the investigation, but Guardia Civil were able to arrest the thief, who turned out to be a Madrid resident who spent his summer holidays in Guardamar.
He only stole cash, and never emptied wallets or purses completely, to not raise suspicions immediately.
He has been accused of five crimes of illegal break-in and theft (as he used a false key), although he could have many more victims, especially foreigners, who did not report money missing. Investigations are ongoing to see if he also stole at another gym in Guardamar.
The thief, who stole at least €900, is currently on bail awaiting court proceedings.
