Airbnb opens Madrid Experiences and plans Sevilla inauguration by year end
NEW Staff Reporter IN ITS bid to take on the tourism industry, home-rentals giant Airbnb is expanding its trips programme - excursions and experiences hosted by locals - to include Madrid and, later this year, Sevilla. It has been available in Barcelona since last year.
Madrid is the 36th city to be included on the Airbnb platform, which allows tourists to plan entire trips through the one site. Spain’s capital currently offers some 40 experiences, averaging a cost of ¤ 44 each.
Gloria Molins, head of Trips’ glo- bal expansión for Airbnb, explained that the idea, marketed as ‘the magic is in the people’, is to give tourists a local insight into any number of interests, from offroute hiking to paella cooking classes or neighbourhood tours, while at the same time allowing “local people to dedicate themselves to their passion or interest while earning some extra money.”
On the thorny subject of holiday rentals in some cities, Molins recognised that “there are some people who agree [with them], and others who don’t.”
