Crash simulation near Alicante airport
By Irena Bodnarec AN EXTREMELY well organised exercise that had taken months of planning and preparation took place yesterday (Thursday) at Elche Business Park, not far from AlicanteElche airport, with students from Alicante University acting as victims.
In the crash simulation, fire trucks used 5,000 litres of water a minute. The various staged accident situations included overturned vehicles, collapsed buildings and a crashed plane with trapped victims - although this was not a real plane. Sniffer dogs and emergency helicopters also landed on nearby ground to evacuate the seriously injured.
All emergency services were also in attendance - firefighters, ambulance workers, Cruz Roja, National Police, Guardia Civil, Army and Civil Protection representatives, all of whom were observing and making notes.
Consular staff from British, Norwegian and Swedish consulates were also in attendance. In total, 508 people and 157 vehicles were mobilised for the simulation.
