HELP of Denia and Marina Alta and the Teulada Moraira Lions Club get together again to purchase two new special TILT shower commode chairs for Hospital La Pedrera, Denia. The chairs enable the patient to be taken into the shower and to be tilted back to ease showering whilst maintaining the patient secure. The chair has a curved head rest and is especially for stroke victims and patients with very little or no upper body use.

The hospital approached HELP President, Candida Wright to see if the association could help to buy one of these chairs. Since the hospital would be sharing the chair between wards she decided to ask the Teulada Moraira Lions to see if they would like to help too and they responded very quickly to her request with a big, Yes. So two chairs instead of one are now in place.

Hospital La Pedrera, was the local hospital for all of the Marina Alta and By Jack Troughton Thrill-seekers Olly Pegrum and Nick Coleman decided their sky-diving adventure should also benefit a Costa Blanca charity – and the jump raised €2,215 for Cancer Care Javea.

The estate agents, colleagues at the Moraira office of Hamiltons of London, travelled to Castellon to sky dive this summer and have since been busy collecting money from sponsors.

Olly presented a cheque to Cancer Care volunteers and was promised the money would be good use helping cancer patients and backing research into the disease.

Thanking the pair for their efforts, Joyce Glenn, acting president of the charity, said: “You did an absolutely fantastic job and we can guarantee it will be well-spent on things that help people.”

She said the charity now had a professional nurse based at Denia Hospital helping patients with questions and to overcome any language barrier; had just purchase treatment chairs for medical centres and had spent €4,000 on specialist creams to help soothe painful skin complaints caused by radiotherapy.

Olly revealed he had always wanted to sky- dive and colleagues had paid for Nick’s jump as a birthday present.

“On the day I was a little scared, I had been all right up until then,” he said. “But once you are back down, you just want to go up again.

“Nick really enjoyed it as well; it was his 40th and he wanted to do something special, and we both decided to do it for a good cause; we had a look at charities in the area and saw what you were doing.”

And Olly said he now wanted to complete a bungee jump. “It’s something else I have always wanted to do.”
