Fifteen students - eight from Ananda College and seven from Nalanda College - who were arrested by the Police in connection with Wednesday’s clash that occurred in Borella and Maradana Police areas, were released on bail yesterday, Police said.

Ten students arrested by the Maradana Police were produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate and were released on surety bail of Rs. 100,000 each. The Magistrate ordered to file the case on May 24.

Five Nalanda College students who were arrested by the Borella Police were also ordered to be released on bail by Colombo Additional Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake. They were released on surety bail of Rs. 100,000 each.

Borella Police brought charges under the Penal Code against the suspects for damaging an SLTB bus and assaulting students of Ananda College. Before releasing the suspects, the Magistrate strictly warned them to avoid violence.

The Magistrate observed that these students would not be remanded even if the charges are brought under Public Property Act, because the danger of mixing them with other suspects in the remand custody. At least eight students were hospitalised after a clash between students of Ananda and Nalanda Colleges in Colombo on Wednesday afternoon. A CTB bus and another private bus were damaged due to the clash in Borella while a car and a van were damaged in Maradana.
