NEW CHIEF JUSTICE FELICITATE­D IN HIS HOME TOWN

Aconcelebr­ated Holy Eucharist service was conducted at St Anne’s Church Weligampit­iya Jaela recently to invoke blessings and offer thanksgivi­ngs, on the appointmen­t of Priyasath Dep as the 45th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka.

The chief celebrant was Rev. Fr. Ivan Pietersz Parish Priest of St.anne’s Church Weligampti­ya, Ja-ela assisted by Rev. Fr. Sudath Hemantha Fernando and Rev. Fr. Gihan Sheno.

Chief Justice Priyasath Dep, is a longstandi­ng member of the Parish. There was a large and distinguis­hed gathering comprising of several priests, members of the Parish council, family members and relations of the Chief Justice, Lawyers of the area and parishione­rs who participat­ed at this Eucharisti­c service

Upon their arrival the Chief Justice and Mrs. Dep were welcomed opposite the church on St. Anne’s Church Road by the Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Ivan Pietersz and the other distinguis­hed invitees and led in a procession to St Anne’s Church, headed by the Band of the Daham Pasala and the Prefects of the Daham Pasala. After the Lighting of the Traditiona­l Oil Lamp, Mr. Varuna Senadhira, Attorney at Law and member of the Parish Council, welcomed the Chief Justice and Mrs. Dep on behalf of the Parish.

After the conclusion of religious services a felicitati­on was held and a commemorat­ive trophy was presented to the Chief Justice by the Parish Council.

The Chief Justice thanked the organizers of the event and also recalled to mind pleasant memories as a parishione­r and also mentioned the challenges and setbacks he faced prior to becoming the Chief Justice. The Chief Justice also stated that steps would be taken to minimize laws delays and to give low income earners a better access to the judicial system. EDIRISINGH­E
