Silent protest staged against using Karadiyana as dumping ground
A group of Buddhist monks, local politicians and area residents staged a silent protest on Saturday (22) near the Karadiyana garbage recycling ground, condemning the attempt to use Karadiyana as the dumping ground of the Colombo municipality.
The protesters covered their mouths with black bands and displayed placards. However, they did not obstruct vehicles transporting garbage from Colombo to Karadiyana in any manner. Police had on the previous day obtained court orders from the Kesbewa and Nugegoda Magistrate’s courts restraining any protest amounting to public annoyance.
Special police contingencies from several police stations in the Mount Lavinia division and the Anti-riot Squad had been called to prevent any possible disturbances.
Chief Incumbent of Thumbowila Sri Saddharmarama Ven.thumbowila Dhammarathana Thera, JVP Western Provincial Council member Laxman Nipunarachchi and Propaganda Secretary of the Frontline Socialist Party, Duminda Nagamuwa addressed the public and severely criticized the steps taken by the government to use Karadiyana as a dumping ground.
