Bail allowed for Akmeemana Thera
Akmeemana Dayarathne Thera who was under remand custody for alleged assault on Rohingya refugees housed in Mount Lavinia was released on conditional bail yesterday by the Mt Lavinia Chief Magistrate and additional District Judge Mohamed Mihal.
Accordingly the Thera was released on three surety bails of Rs 500,000 each.
The courts further directed that the sureties should be permanent residents of the area. A ban on overseas travel was also imposed on the Thera. The court also reiterated that in the event the suspect gets involved in any other crime the bail would be revoked.
When this case was called yesterday at noon the suspect was not present in courts. However the attorneys representing the suspect agreed to submit facts to the courts requesting for bail to be allowed. They denied any involvement by the suspect in this incident . In reply Assistant Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris stated that the suspect with the others had entered the building where the destitute refugees were staying and caused severe damages to the building.
