Bail al­lowed for Ak­mee­m­ana Thera

Ak­mee­m­ana Da­yarathne Thera who was un­der re­mand cus­tody for al­leged as­sault on Ro­hingya refugees housed in Mount Lavinia was re­leased on con­di­tional bail yes­ter­day by the Mt Lavinia Chief Mag­is­trate and ad­di­tional Dis­trict Judge Mo­hamed Mi­hal.

Ac­cord­ingly the Thera was re­leased on three surety bails of Rs 500,000 each.

The courts fur­ther di­rected that the sureties should be per­ma­nent res­i­dents of the area. A ban on over­seas travel was also im­posed on the Thera. The court also re­it­er­ated that in the event the sus­pect gets in­volved in any other crime the bail would be re­voked.

When this case was called yes­ter­day at noon the sus­pect was not present in courts. How­ever the at­tor­neys rep­re­sent­ing the sus­pect agreed to sub­mit facts to the courts re­quest­ing for bail to be al­lowed. They de­nied any in­volve­ment by the sus­pect in this in­ci­dent . In re­ply As­sis­tant Solic­i­tor Gen­eral Dileepa Peiris stated that the sus­pect with the oth­ers had en­tered the build­ing where the des­ti­tute refugees were stay­ing and caused se­vere dam­ages to the build­ing.
