LG Bills to be gazetted to­mor­row

The Mu­nic­i­pal Coun­cil Amend­ment Bill, Ur­ban Coun­cil Amend­ment Bill and the Pradeshiya Sabha Amend­ment Bill which were passed in Par­lia­ment on Mon­day is to be gazetted to­mor­row clear­ing the way to hold the lo­cal gov­ern­ment elec­tions in Jan­uary next year, in­formed sources said yes­ter­day.

An of­fi­cial from the Elec­tions Com­mis­sion who did not wished to be named said the Min­is­ter of Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment and Pro­vin­cial Coun­cils Faizer Mustapha will meet the Chair­man and oth­ers in the Com­mis­sion to­mor­row (Oc­to­ber 13) to dis­cuss about the gazette be­fore is­su­ing it. The gazette is to be is­sued on Fri­day evening.

Sources close to Speaker Karu Jaya­suriya said he will en­dorse the Bills to­day.“speaker was busy on Tues­day and was not avail­able yes­ter­day,” the sources said in­di­cat­ing that the en­dorse­ment will be done to­day. The of­fi­cial from the Elec­tions Com­mis­sion said there are few other tech­ni­cal is­sues which have to be set­tled. He said there are sev­eral er­rors when it comes to spellings of ward names and the cor­rec­tions will have to be made and gazetted once again. Fur­ther he said. There are cer­tain wards which is set to go un­der wa­ter as a re­sult of Mor­a­ga­hakanda pro­ject.“peo­ple in these ar­eas will have to be set­tled in other wards,” he said. How­ever these is­sues are not ma­jor ones and will not re­sult in post­pone­ment of the polls which could be held in Jan­uary,” he said.

Fur­ther it was re­vealed that Chair­man of Elec­tions Com­mis­sion Mahinda De­shapriya had al­ready in­formed po­lit­i­cal par­ties to en­sure that 25 per­cent of the can­di­dates they field are youth and to en­sure that they give nom­i­na­tions to phys­i­cally chal­lenged peo­ple as well.
