LG Bills to be gazetted tomorrow
The Municipal Council Amendment Bill, Urban Council Amendment Bill and the Pradeshiya Sabha Amendment Bill which were passed in Parliament on Monday is to be gazetted tomorrow clearing the way to hold the local government elections in January next year, informed sources said yesterday.
An official from the Elections Commission who did not wished to be named said the Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils Faizer Mustapha will meet the Chairman and others in the Commission tomorrow (October 13) to discuss about the gazette before issuing it. The gazette is to be issued on Friday evening.
Sources close to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said he will endorse the Bills today.“speaker was busy on Tuesday and was not available yesterday,” the sources said indicating that the endorsement will be done today. The official from the Elections Commission said there are few other technical issues which have to be settled. He said there are several errors when it comes to spellings of ward names and the corrections will have to be made and gazetted once again. Further he said. There are certain wards which is set to go under water as a result of Moragahakanda project.“people in these areas will have to be settled in other wards,” he said. However these issues are not major ones and will not result in postponement of the polls which could be held in January,” he said.
Further it was revealed that Chairman of Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya had already informed political parties to ensure that 25 percent of the candidates they field are youth and to ensure that they give nominations to physically challenged people as well.
