Two brothers found guilty of murder sentenced to death
Walavidurage Rasantha alias ‘Kovila’ and his brother Walavidurage Amith Madusanka were found guilty of murdering Chaminda Kumara Perera and yesterday sentenced to death by Panadura High Court Judge Padmini Ranawaka Gunatilleke.
The two brothers, both residents of Panadura had on December 25, 2005 kidnapped and stabbed to the death Kumara Perera who was a resident of Walpola.
Police told Court that the victim had been in love with a sister of the accused who warned her to give up the affair and when their pleas failed they had killed him. The JMO who performed the postmortem examination said there were 19 stab injuries on the body. The two accused indicted on charges of unlawful assembly with the motive to murder. The accused were each sentenced to six month rigorous imprisonment for unlawful assembly.
The Judge said the prosecution had proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt. State Counsel K.V. Indika prosecuted while Attorney Chanaka Amarasinghe appeared for the defence.
