Two sus­pects, Kum­buk tim­ber, power saw taken into cus­tody

A large stock of Kum­buk tim­ber and a power saw mounted on a trac­tor were seized and two sus­pects ar­rested by the Vavu­niya po­lice dur­ing a raid in Eechchanku­lam. Po­lice said the felling of Kum­buk trees on tank reser­va­tions were going on unchecked and that an or­gan­ised group of rack­e­teers re­ceiv­ing po­lit­i­cal pa­tron­age and the help of se­nior of­fi­cials was re­spon­si­ble to the racket.

A se­nior po­lice of­fi­cer said the sus­pects had been sup­ply­ing tim­ber to build­ing con­trac­tors and tim­ber mer­chants in sev­eral ar­eas and that it was ques­tion­able as to how they had ob­tained per­mits to trans­port il­licit tim­ber.
