Re­tired Land Reg­istry of­fi­cial sus­pect in forged deeds case

A re­tired of­fi­cial of the Anuradhapura Land Reg­istry and an of­fice peon of the District Sec­re­tariat were ar­rested by Anuradhapura Po­lice on sus­pi­cion of ef­fect­ing the pos­ses­sion of land on forged deeds dur­ing a raid on a house in Anuradhapura town.

The 74- year- old re­tired of­fi­cial of the land branch of the District Sec­re­tariat was the owner of the house.

They were ar­rested dur­ing an in­ves­ti­ga­tion into a com­plaint made by the District Reg­is­trar and sev­eral oth­ers that deeds in the Land Reg­istry had been forged by an or­gan­ised group. Po­lice car­ried out the raid on a search war­rant is­sued by the Anuradhapura mag­is­trate. In­ves­ti­ga­tions re­vealed that pages had been de­tached from the regis­tra­tion books and re­placed af­ter mak­ing al­ter­ations.
