Woman ar­rested with large stock of il­licit liquor and dis­till­ing equip­ment

A large stock of il­licit liquor and dis­till­ing equip­ment were seized and a woman ar­rested by the Ke­galle Po­lice, dur­ing a raid on an il­le­gal brew­ery at Deniyapi­tiya off Karandu­pana in Ke­galle. Po­lice had carried out the raid on in­for­ma­tion re­ceived by the in­tel­li­gence unit.

Po­lice said a cou­ple had been car­ry­ing on the racket for a long time and that the hus­band fled from the scene dur­ing the raid and evaded ar­rest. In­ves­ti­ga­tions re­vealed that the wa­ter from a nearby well had been pumped to the brew­ery and waste wa­ter from the bar­rels flowed into a pit in­side the house pre­vent­ing any smell be­ing emit­ted to the neigh­bours.

Dur­ing the raid the po­lice had seized 3500 litres of Goda, 1000 litres of spirit , 20 plas­tic bar­rels, six iron bar­rels, two gas cook­ers, a wa­ter pump, four gunny bags of sugar and 20 pack­ets of yeast. The sus­pect woman was to be pro­duced be­fore the Ke­galle Mag­is­trate yes­ter­day.

A po­lice team un­der IPS Anu­ra­pak­sha and Chan­drasekara carried out the raid on the in­struc­tions of HQI Ke­galle CI Pra­neeth Manawadu, ASP Gamini Then­nakoon and SP Chamika Wick­remesinghe.
