Con-man ar­rested for cheat­ing mil­lions of ru­pees

A sus­pect wanted in con­nec­tion with cheat­ing sev­eral young men and women and col­lect­ing more than Rs. 10 mil­lion from them on the prom­ise of find­ing them em­ploy­ment abroad was ar­rested by the Panadura Crime In­ves­ti­ga­tion Unit. The 42-year-old sus­pect was a res­i­dent of Pin­watta in Panadura.

He had cheated sev­eral in­di­vid­u­als in Moratuwa, Am­balan­goda, Gir­i­ulla, Ho­magama and Makola and col­lected money from them on the prom­ise of pro­vid­ing them em­ploy­ment in Italy, Is­rael, Aus­tralia and the Mid­dle East coun­tries.

In­ves­ti­ga­tions re­vealed that the sus­pect who rented mo­tor ve­hi­cles from rent-a-car ser­vices in El­pi­tiya and Am­balan­goda areas mort­gaged them on forged doc­u­ments and earned about Rs.15 mil­lion. He was pro­duced be­fore the Panadura Chief Mag­is­trate and re­manded till No­vem­ber 15.
