Incident of 2012

Sunday Times (Sri Lanka) - - NEWS/COMMENT -

Senarath Bandula Liyanarachchi was among the 15 inmates who testified before the Committee of Inquiry appointed in 2015 by the Justice Minister to look into the Welikada prison incident of 2012.

At the time Senarath had been detained in the “YO” ward and had witnessed the events that unfolded on the night of 9.11.2012 and the following morning.

In his evidence, he said he had seen three inmates being taken away from where they all were by two men in civvies. The three men were later found shot dead. He said he was not sure of the identity of the two men who had taken these prisoners away.

He had told the Committee that due to his knowledge about the incident he had been transferred from Welikada to Dumbara prison and from there onwards to Mahara prison. He is now at Anuradhapura.
