Weather, care­less­ness and ac­ci­dents

In ad­di­tion to the ad­verse weather con­di­tions which has wreaked havoc in the coun­try’s south, we also wit­nessed sev­eral ma­jor ac­ci­dents in­clud­ing a ve­hi­cle pile-up not usual in the coun­try.

At Wel­gama in the Matara district a van ran off the road on Wed­nes­day caus­ing a pile-up of four 3-wheel­ers, six mo­tor cy­cles crash­ing into each other and leav­ing sev­eral per­sons in­jured.

On Thurs­day, 25 per­sons were in­jured when a bus ply­ing from Kataragama to Colombo crashed onto a tree.

And on Fri­day two buses crashed head-on at a bend along the Tan­galle-Gand­hara Road, leav­ing 19 per­sons in­jured. The ac­ci­dent oc­curred when a bus car­ry­ing a load of hol­i­day-mak­ers which was trav­el­ling on the wrong side of the road crashed head-on into an­other bus.

Ac­cord­ing to po­lice the bus had skid­ded off the road dur­ing bad weather at the time.

Po­lice have ad­vised mo­torists to ex­er­cise ex­tra cau­tion when driv­ing dur­ing ad­verse weather con­di­tions.
