Get yourself screened today near Nelum Pokuna
The main event linked to World Diabetes Day in Sri Lanka includes an exhibition and health screening programme today (November 11) at Green Path, Colombo 7 (in front of Nelum Pokuna) from 7.30 a.m. to 12 noon.
The diabetes care free services available today are blood tests (blood sugar/lipid profile/ HbA1c); eye tests; blood pressure; BMI (body mass index) test; diabetes counselling; dietary advice from professionals; and nutrition counselling.
The scheduled lectures include: ‘Introduction to diabetes and prevention’ by Dr. Prasad Katulanda; ‘Introduction to diabetes in Sri Lanka’ by Dr. Noel Somasundaram; ‘Myths surrounding diabetes’ by Dr. Manilka Sumanatilleke; ‘ Your heart and diabetes’ by Dr. Vajira Senaratne; ‘Diabetes and women’ by Dr. Sivatharshya Pathmanathan; ‘Diabetes and children’ by Dr. Navoda Atapattu; ‘Protecting your feet’ by Dr. Rezni Cassim; ‘Preventing kidney damage in diabetes’ by Dr. Ruchika Lanerolle; ‘Diabetes and your eye’ by Dr. Deepani Wewalwala; and ‘A healthy diet to prevent and control diabetes’ by Dr. Renuka Jayatissa.
There will also be satellite programmes in 36 main towns outside Colombo from November 12 to 16. These programmeswill include diabetes and complications screening, health education seminars, exhibitions and mini walks.
In a publicity blitz to make people aware of the gravity of diabetes, a series of walks, marathons, cycling events and public mobilizing programmes are to be held in these 36 cities across the country.
Meanwhile, a series of essay and art competitions among both teachers and students in all government schools have drawn a roomful of entries. The awards’ ceremony is to be held in January next year.
