The main event linked to World Di­a­betes Day in Sri Lanka in­cludes an ex­hi­bi­tion and health screen­ing pro­gramme to­day (November 11) at Green Path, Colombo 7 (in front of Nelum Pokuna) from 7.30 a.m. to 12 noon.

The di­a­betes care free ser­vices avail­able to­day are blood tests (blood sugar/lipid pro­file/ HbA1c); eye tests; blood pressure; BMI (body mass in­dex) test; di­a­betes coun­selling; di­etary ad­vice from pro­fes­sion­als; and nu­tri­tion coun­selling.

The sched­uled lec­tures in­clude: ‘In­tro­duc­tion to di­a­betes and preven­tion’ by Dr. Prasad Kat­u­landa; ‘In­tro­duc­tion to di­a­betes in Sri Lanka’ by Dr. Noel So­ma­sun­daram; ‘Myths sur­round­ing di­a­betes’ by Dr. Manilka Su­ma­natilleke; ‘ Your heart and di­a­betes’ by Dr. Va­jira Se­naratne; ‘Di­a­betes and women’ by Dr. Si­vatharshya Path­manathan; ‘Di­a­betes and chil­dren’ by Dr. Navoda Ata­p­attu; ‘Pro­tect­ing your feet’ by Dr. Rezni Cas­sim; ‘Pre­vent­ing kid­ney dam­age in di­a­betes’ by Dr. Ruchika Lanerolle; ‘Di­a­betes and your eye’ by Dr. Deep­ani We­wal­wala; and ‘A healthy diet to pre­vent and con­trol di­a­betes’ by Dr. Renuka Jay­atissa.

There will also be satellite pro­grammes in 36 main towns out­side Colombo from November 12 to 16. Th­ese pro­grammeswill in­clude di­a­betes and com­pli­ca­tions screen­ing, health ed­u­ca­tion sem­i­nars, exhibitions and mini walks.

In a pub­lic­ity blitz to make peo­ple aware of the gravity of di­a­betes, a se­ries of walks, marathons, cycling events and pub­lic mo­bi­liz­ing pro­grammes are to be held in th­ese 36 cities across the coun­try.

Mean­while, a se­ries of essay and art com­pe­ti­tions among both teach­ers and stu­dents in all govern­ment schools have drawn a room­ful of en­tries. The awards’ cer­e­mony is to be held in Jan­uary next year.
