Detainee gunned down while trying to escape
Detainee Jurmen Aroma, 31, was fatally wounded when he tried to escape from the Center police bureau. Police Chief Inder Jangbahadoer, regional chief of Paramaribo, told Times of Suriname that the detainee had told the police that he wanted to speak to President Desi Bouterse. He explained that the detainee was going to be transferred to the jailhouse. The detainee ignored the police and began to run amok. Although the detainee was handcuffed, he managed to jump on tables and smash things at the police bureau. He also managed to shatter a glass door and a glass window. He also pushed the computers off the tables but fortunately they did not break. The detainee then jumped out of a window and jumped over several fences when he reached the street. Several police officers went after him and fired a few warning shots. When the detainee refused to comply, the police officers opened fire on him. The detainee was reportedly hit in the butt and collapsed in a yard located along the Oude Hofstraat. It is suspected that the man died as a result of blood loss. Reports indicate that he had been arrested and jailed in the Commewijne District on an aggravated assault charge. The police chief explained that the suspect had initially been locked up at Meerzorg but that he was transferred to Richelieu because of his misconduct. When he also failed to behave at the jailhouse at Richelieu, he was transferred to Center. Reports indicate that the suspect managed to bite a police officer while trying to escape. Jangbahadoer explained that the police officers did not take any chances when he had escaped which is why they immediately went after him. He made it clear that the police officers chose the correct course of action but that the Capital Offences Department will nevertheless probe the incident for the objectivity of the investigation.
