Chi­na vows stron­ger coo­p­e­ra­ti­on in im­ple­men­ting Pa­ris Agree­ment

BE­IJ­ING - Chi­na is wil­ling to streng­then coo­p­e­ra­ti­on with par­ties con­cerned in co­ping with cli­ma­te chan­ge to en­su­re the im­ple­men­ta­ti­on of the Pa­ris Agree­ment, said a Fo­reign Mi­ni­stry spo­kesper­son in Be­ij­ing on Mon­day.

Geng Shuang ma­de the re­marks whi­le res­pon­ding to a ques­ti­on re­gar­ding the Pa­ris Agree­ment, which will en­ter in­to for­ce on Nov. 4, 2016. “The im­ple­men­ta­ti­on of the agree­ment will be a new start for glo­bal ef­forts in ad­dres­sing cli­ma­te chan­ge, and of­fers guid­an­ce for a new sta­ge of green and low-car­bon de­vel­op­ment”, Geng said at a rou­ti­ne press brie­fing.

Con­si­de­ring the Pa­ris Agree­ment as an example for glo­bal coo­p­e­ra­ti­on in ad­dres­sing glo­bal chal­len­ges, Geng said it ser­ved as an im­por­tant re­fe­ren­ce for glo­bal ef­forts in ad­dres­sing other pro­blems. Chi­na re­cent­ly de­po­si­ted its ra­ti­fi­ca­ti­on of the Pa­ris Agree­ment with UN Se­cre­ta­ry-Ge­ne­ral Ban Ki-moon, to­gether with the Uni­ted Sta­tes. Geng said it laid im­por­tant foun­da­ti­on for ear­ly en­for­ce­ment of the cli­ma­te pact.

Chi­na, as a res­pon­si­ble ma­jor de­vel­o­ping coun­try, has ma­de a po­si­ti­ve con­tri­bu­ti­on to en­su­re the im­ple­men­ta­ti­on of the Pa­ris Agree­ment at an ear­ly da­te, Geng said. He ad­ded that the coun­try will con­ti­nue to fa­ci­li­ta­te fol­low-up ne­go­ti­a­ti­ons on the Agree­ment, and to boost green, low-car­bon and sustai­na­ble de­vel­op­ment in the world.

The Pa­ris Agree­ment was adop­ted in De­cem­ber 2015. It is the third in­ter­na­ti­o­nal do­cu­ment on ad­dres­sing cli­ma­te chan­ge, fol­lo­wing the 1992 Uni­ted Na­ti­ons Fra­me­work Con­ven­ti­on on Cli­ma­te Chan­ge and the 1997 Ky­o­to Pro­to­col. (Xin­hu­a­
