DSB donates SRD 10,000 to Kennedy Stichting
The Kennedy Stichting on Monday received a donation of SRD 10,000 from De Surinaamsche Bank ( DSB). Lea Welzijn, general director at the foundation, explained that the donation was made in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of deaf education in Suriname. The Kennedy Foundation provides education and shelter to the deaf and those with a hearing impairment. There are currently 88 students at the Kennedy school. 45 of them live at the foundation’s boarding school. The foundation has a very small budget and is dependent on donations and subsidy to finance its operations. The foundation pointed out that the hearing aids are not cheap. The foundation has noticed a sharp decrease in donations which is why it appreciates the donation of the DSB Bank. “It is a big help.” The foundation also stopped with the building maintenance some time ago due to the lack of funds. The director explained that there are cracks in the wall and that the roof is also leaking. She explained that the most important thing is to keep the foundation up-and-running. The foundation receives support from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo) and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. Sozavo has already given the foundation a portion of the 2106 subsidy.
