Presidential elections to take place on July 13

-

With only a few days to go it is still unclear who will be the ABOP’s candidate for the vice presidency.Ronnie Brunswijk who was elected chairman of parliament last week has been mentioned as the candidate of ABOP but the party still has not made any official statements. On July 6 parliament decided to hold the presidential elections on July 13. Today is the last day for the parties to present the candidates. It has not been ruled out that the National Democratic Party (NDP) which is currently the biggest opposition party will also present its candidates. Sources, however, told Times of Suriname that this is highly unlikely because because President

Desi Bouterse hwo is the chairman of the NDP has repeatedly pointed out that he supports a smooth transition and that the new coalition can count on his full support. Acting chairman of parliament, Dew Sharman, on Monday pointed out that he had not been officially informed who will be the ABOP’s candidate for the vice presidency. The parties have until 3 p.m. today to present the names of the candidates for the presidency and the vice presidency. Sharman also pointed out that it already known that Chandrikapersad Santokhi will be presented by the coalition as their candidate for the presidency.
