In February this year, government allocated over E2.5Bn for the country’s security forces being the Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF), Royal Swaziland Police Service (RSPS) and His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS).
In the last financial year, E2.3Bn had been allocated to this sector.
According to the government book of estimates for the 2017/18 financial year, a total of E1 191 650 000 was allocated to the ministry of defence, E995 695 000 to the police while a total of E505 896 000 was channelled towards the Correctional Services.
The minister of finance when shedding light on the allocation noted that in line with the realisation that security is a vital pre-condition for stability and economic growth in any nation, government would continue to support the country’s security forces.
“The budget allocated to the USDF will be used to strengthen our border security and maintain peace in the Kingdom.
An additional budget has been allocated to the Royal Swaziland Police to enhance the delivery of services in rural and peri-urban areas and improve emergency response and crowd management services. The allocation for Correctional Services is to cater for the welfare and rehabilitation of criminal offenders,” he said.
