Taiwanese government in facilitating such a workshop that he felt came at the right time when the country tries earnestly to support health workers in every aspect such as equipping them with the required knowledge to face all the challenges in the sector. He said the country would not realise the 2022 dream of being a first world country without the support of the Taiwanese.

A presentation made by the ministry’s Sebentile Myeni from the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, highlighted that by 2020 the situation of cancer would have worsened with the country facing an enormous 1 203 cases 2020, 1 083 cases by 2019 and by 2018 it is projected that the country will be facing 964 cases. For this year, the situation is such that government is dealing with 844 cases. The report reflects that basically there is an increase in the number of NCD cases observed in the country.

Government has, therefore, set up an NCD Unit to ensure an empowered population where NCDs are no longer a major public health problem. It also seeks to improve the health of the Swazi population by reducing the burden of NCDs through prevention and control targeted interventions. It also seeks to reduce NCD related morbidity, disability and mortality.

On the other hand, globally, NCDs are the leading causes of death, killing more people each year than all other causes combined. NCDs kill 40 million people each year, equivalent to 70 per cent of all deaths globally. Each year, 15 million people die from an NCD between the ages of 30 and 69 years and over 80 per cent of these "premature" deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
