ILLOVO, FLY­ERS AVOID EACH OTHER IN ING­WENYAMA CUP DRAW

Ubombo Fly­ers have been drawn against Mag­wanyane FC in the quar­te­fi­nal of the re­gional phase of Ing­wenyama Cup Lubombo Su­per league, avoid­ing a derby fix­ture against ri­vals Illovo FC who face other neigh­bours CPL in what could be in­ter­est­ing fix­tures for foot­ball lovers this com­ing week­end.

The draw of the tour­na­ment was con­ducted at the Lubombo Re­gional Foot­ball As­so­ci­a­tion (LRFA) of­fices in Siteki on Tues­day evening. CK Sur­vivors host City War­riors while Rail United have a date with new com­ers Many­ovu Young Fighters in other fix­tures. In their maiden Ing­wenyama Cup ap­pear­ance Young Fighters have reached the last eight at the ex­pense of fel­low rook­ies Kukhanyeni F.C whom they beat in the pre­lim­i­nary round to make their own his­tory.

Fly­ers and CPL, who both qual­i­fied to play, in the main tour­na­ment last year are also on course to re­peat the same feat should they over­come their op­po­nents through­out the jour­ney and it waits to be seen if their

op­po­nents could eas­ily af­ford to bite the dust at this stage. Team rep­re­sen­ta­tives who at­tended the draw were cu­rios the mo­ment Lubombo Eastern Zone Sec­re­tary Kwanele Nkomondze, who con­ducted the draw, picked up the first four host­ing teams, thus con­firm­ing that Fly­ers, CPL, United and CK Sur­vivors would not play each other. Ten­sion en­gulfed the house when the home team op­po­nents were picked hence the mixed re­ac­tions that fol­lowed there­after brought the vibe usu­ally as­so­ci­ated with this mouth wa­ter­ing tour­na­ment.

The Ing­wenyama Cup has brought a new di­men­sion in lo­cal foot­ball as su­per league teams have to bat­tle it out for cham­pi­onship at re­gional level and na­tional level be­fore join­ing the other 26 elite league teams in the main tour­na­ment.

The last eight games con­tin­ues this week­end in Lubombo, with the semi fi­nal set for next week­end ac­cord­ing to LRFA Chair-man Man­gal­iso Lang­wenya who em­pha­sised that teams must keep on prac­tis­ing the good sports­man­ship be­hav­iour through­out the tour­na­ment.
