Correctional truck rolls with four inmates
Atruck from His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) carrying four inmates overturned yesterday afternoon at Gilgal.
The inmates and the warder, who was driving, were all injured and rushed to Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital, where they were treated.
According to well- placed sources, the truck which was headed to Big Bend was disturbed by an oncoming vehicle which was trying to overtake another and when the driver swerved to avoid it, he lost control and it rolled.
The truck was being escorted by a sedan from the Correctional Services, which however, was not involved in the accident. The four inmates and warder, who came worse off, were treated and discharged at Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital, said the source. Police at the scene confirmed that the driver had the most visible injuries, where- as the inmates’ ones could not be ascertained as they were still being attended to by medical personnel.
At 7pm the truck was being towed from the accident scene by a breakdown service vehicle from the Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF).
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba confirmed the accident, saying he had been briefed by officers at the scene.
However, he said details of what actually happened were still scanty as police were still to conduct their own investigations.
Mamba could not be drawn to comment on whether or not there were suspicions of foul play resulting in the accident. His Majesty’s Correctional Services’ PRO Gugulethu Dlamini said she had not yet been informed about the accident yesterday. She promised to give full details once she has gathered all the relevant information today.
