Having held their positions on acting basis, three magistrates have been confirmed into their senior positions. Pigg’s Peak Principal Magistrate Joseph Gumedze now holds the position on substantive basis as Manzini S e ni or Magistrat e Phathaphatha Mdluli and Siteki Senior Magistrate Musa Nxumalo. They were reportedly called to a meeting over a week ago by Chief Justice Bheki Maphalala where only two were in attendance as Mdluli was reportedly sick.

According to a well-placed source, the two met the CJ where they were informed of their confirmation. Of note, their confirmation letters are yet to be given to them as all three are reportedly still in the dark concerning the effective dates. The three have served in their different duty stations for different durat i ons as Gumedze was transferred from Manzini in 2015 where he was senior magistrate.

Less than a year after his transfer, his leadership became pronounced when t oget her wit h S e ni or Magistrate Siphosini Dlamini and the Magistrate Simangele Mbatha, were able to reduce the backlog of cases remarkably resulting in his station having the least cases to deal with after having completed about 1 000 of them, with 96 pending. Mdluli’s transfer to Manzini came about after his alleged fall out with Principal Magistrate Fikile Nhlabatsi which led to the former writing a stinging letter stating that in the event she died, he should be blamed. This exchange came about after Nhlabatsi was transferred to her position following her arrest during the height of the judicial crises.
