Tokens less than deserved overtime - ministry

Sunday Observer - - NEWS -

The ministry of finance, though not privy to the total amount paid out as tokens, says the money was for overtime. Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Finance Bheki Bhembe said they did not approve the token payments as overtime payments do not need their consideration, nor SCOPE’s.

“Overtime is an internal matter within an organisation,” he said. When asked if the uniform amounts, seeing as managers got E10 000 and juniors E5 000, could be concluded to be overtime without a clear method on their computation, he said they were supposed to be paid even more than this and a decision made to standardise as per the resultant tokens.

“That’s what forced us to make it uniform as it is far below the overtime incurred,” Bhembe said.

However, Bhembe could not reveal the complete figure as he was not aware as this was paid from within SRA’s budget.
