An­drea brace sends Swal­lows crash­ing out

JO­HANN E SBURG - Mar­itzburg United booked their spot in the Last 16 of the Ned­bank Cup, af­ter de­feat­ing Swal­lows FC 3-1 in ex­tra-time.

An­drea Filec­cia grabbed the lead for the Team of Choice in the sec­ond minute, with a half-vol­ley at the far post fol­low­ing a cross from Mx­olisi Kunene.

Filec­cia al­most dou­bled the lead in the 11 th minute with a free­header in­side the box, but his ef­fort sailed over the bar.

Joseph Banyane was close to get­ting on the score-sheet in the 14th minute, af­ter his long range strike was par­ried away by Bon­gani Mpan­dle.

Tshepo Mashego al­most equalised for the Dube Birds in the 22nd minute af­ter a bril­liant run on the near post, but his out­stretched strike hit the out­side of the post.

Mashego did find the equaliser for Swal­lows in the 34th minute, af­ter shield­ing the ball bril­liant ly be­fore vol­ley­ing past Mpan­dle, 1-1. The Birds were en­er­gised there­after and were un­lucky not to have gone into the lead be­fore half­time af­ter Mashego hit the post. Filec­cia should have got his brace 10 min­utes into the sec­ond stanza, af­ter he found a loose ball to go through one- on- one with t he goal­keeper, but Vusimuzi Ntikinga made a bril­liant stop to keep the scores level.

The tempo of the match was slowed down with 20 min­utes re­main­ing, fol­low­ing a fran­tic start to the sec­ond stanza. Yazid Atouba could have sent Fadlu Davids’ troops ahead eight min­utes be­fore time, but his close-range strike was smoth­ered by Ntikinga.

Nei­ther side could find a win­ning in the clos­ing stages, forc­ing the clash i nto ex­tra­time.
