SWAZILAND Revenue Authority (SRA) Commissioner General Dumisani Masilela has cleared the air when it comes to special payment arrangements for tax payers and companies.

He said they appreciate taxpayers coming forward to make special arrangements when it comes to their taxes. “However this is not to say we will stop in our responsibility to collect tax as mandated by the government,” he said.

Masilela said as a government body, they appreciate the economic environment and are looking forward to such a time where they can come to a taxpayers doorsteps or company door steps. The idea of coming clean through voluntary disclosure programme is open.

“It is worth noting that the voluntary disclosure programme in place will only be effective when taxpayers openly come to us without prior communication from our office and they provide us with full accurate details,” he said.

He said SRA viewed business as a key partner and their strategy makes it easy to comply.

Masilela said they had shown this, through listening to the public when they complained and had staggered submission of annual returns as.

“Our doors are always open for engagement. SRA is not a monster that is out to kill businesses in the country but a partner in business that is concerned about the welfare of businesses.

“As companies make more profits, we are happy to make more money through regulated tax, putting into consideration that we have a 27.5 per cent stake in every company, we are not out to make new tax laws that are meant to milk companies dry,” he said.

Masilela said the role of SRA was the implementation of the agreements (movement of goods and according specified preference), registration of manufactures/exporters to gain access into markets under the agreements, administration of the rules of origin of each trade agreement and Issuance and validation of certificates of origin.
