GOVERNMENT’S arrears in rates at the Manzini Municipal Council has shot up from E4 million in 2016 to E17 million in 2017.

This shocking figure was revealed by Manzini Acting City Treasurer Mfanafuthi Mamba yesterday during a stakeholders meeting at The George Hotel.

Mamba said this when presenting the financials of the 2016/17 annual report for the municipality.

Stakeholders who attended the meeting raised concerns about such a huge debt by government.

They wanted to know what council is doing about the non-payment of rates by government.

In response, Chief Executive Officer Lungile Dlamini said they are working on the issue.

She said they engaged government who promised to raise the owed funds.

During the meeting, the stakeholders said it was about time the Council considered having their own police officers (Metro police) just like in other countries and the money collected from fines would go to the Municipality instead of going to government’s coffers.
