Elderly man dies after drinking umcombotsi
RESIDENTS of Mambane have been left speculating after an elderly man of the area mysteriously died a few moments after drinking (umcombotsi) a traditional brew from a local drinking spot.
The man’s wife is also reported to be sickly as she also had a few sips from the same jar of the brew which her husband drank before dying a couple of hours later.
The incident which has left residents in shock happened on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified by family members as December Mahlangu (68). Sources close to the matter disclosed that he went to a drinking spot which normally sells traditional brew.
The spot is situated about 200 metres away from his homestead.
As a norm, Mahlangu went there together with his wife. The couple is said to have had a few jars umcombotsi of before calling it a day.
While on their way home, the deceased and his wife are said to have entered into a homestead which is situated less than 100 metres from the drinking spot, and negotiated for shelter as it was now raining heavily.
A relative who identified himself as Matsenjwa said the deceased complained of a severe stomach-ache whilst waiting for the rain to subside. The two eventually went to their homestead late in the evening where the deceased’ condition worsened.
He is said to have later died while his family was still trying to give him home made remedies. By yesterday, the deceased’ wife was also reported to be sickly, suffering from stomach-ache and diarrhoea.
The death of the elderly man and the subsequent sickly condition of his wife has left residents of the area wondering about the cause of his death. “I can confirm the death of Mahlangu as members of the family have reported same, but they have not yet registered a complaint of any sort regarding his demise,” said Matsenjwa.
