Automation continues to reduce the repetitive elements of jobs. But automation usually affects only certain aspects of work, and in many cases technological change even creates new fields of activity. Public relations offices today also manage social media accounts – this became possible only with the emergence of social networks. Viewed historically, full automation (= substitution) is the absolute exception. According to economist James Bessen, there is only one occupational profile in the US that has disappeared altogether in the past decades: elevator operator.
