The Land of Unicorns
In the start-up world, the ultimate goal is to build your company to a shareholder value of at least one billion dollars. Such companies are called “unicorns” because they are so rare. The market research company CB Insights maintains the highly respected “Global Unicorn Club” database. Membership to this exclusive club currently numbers 237 companies (as of May 1, 2018). Two predictable countries top the list: the US (117) and China (65). The only other nations reaching double digits are the UK (13) and India (10). Switzerland has two entries (MindMaze and Avaloq). Based on population, though, this puts Switzerland in a respectable second place.
