The Star & Garter Homes, London
Like fellow Londoner Battersea Power Station, The Star and Garter is a Grade II-listed building. The Richmond site started life as an inn in the early 18th century, before turning into a hotel frequented by the likes of Charles Dickens and Alfred Lord Tennyson in the second half of the 19th century. Even Queen Victoria and French emperor Napoleon III visited the hotel.
In 1916, the current building came into being, designed by Sir Edwin Cooper as the headquarters of The Royal Star & Garter Homes charity. Queen Mary then designated it as treatment space for ex-servicemen returning from World War I.
In the 21st century, it has been transformed into 89 beautiful apartments and duplexes at the hands of architects Paul Davis + Partners, who have maintained period features while blending these with fine contemporary design elements. The King’s Room has been painstakingly restored, even down to its original parquet floors, and landscape architect and historian Todd Longstaffe- Gowan is spearheading efforts to restore the gardens and terraces to their former glory.
“The prominent façade and the internal details will allow us to create some of the most architecturally interesting and impressive apartments to have come to the London market for decades,” says Rebecca Littler, sales and marketing director at London Square, the developer chosen by The Royal Star & Garter Homes to undertake the restoration project.
Of course, restoring such a building has its obstacles. “The layout of the internal structure is complicated as it currently exists and we had to find ways of reconfiguring the internal space to create a suitable layout for the apartments,” says Littler. “We also had to overcome the challenge of how to include the indoor swimming pool, spa and fitness suite.”
