Wash­ing­ton dent Detroit’s play­off hopes with win

Mike Green had a goal and an as­sist as Wash­ing­ton beat Detroit 2-1 in the NHL on Sun­day, putting the Red Wings in an anx­ious spot as they try to ex­tend their streak of post­sea­son ap­pear­ances.

Braden Holtby stopped 35 shots and Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored for the Cap­i­tals, who clinched a play­off berth and moved into sec­ond place in the Metropoli­tan Di­vi­sion.

Dar­ren Helm scored for Detroit, and Petr Mrazek fin­ished with 26 saves.

The Red Wings, try­ing to reach the play­offs for the 24th straight sea­son, re­mained tied with Bos­ton and Pitts­burgh for one of the last three play­off spots in the Eastern Con­fer­ence with 95 points — just two points ahead of the Sen­a­tors, who are ninth place.

Ottawa lost to Toronto 3-2 in a shootout, but still picked up a valu­able point with three games left for each team. Pitts­burgh, mean­while, fell to Philadel­phia 4-1 — the Pen­guins’ 10th loss in their last 13 games.

Peter Hol­land scored the win­ning goal in the sev­enth round of the shootout to lift Toronto to the win. Jonathan Bernier had 43 saves through over­time.

Erik Karls­son and rookie Mark Stone scored for Ottawa, and An­drew Ham­mond fin­ished with 36 saves — in­clud­ing 21 in the first pe­riod.

Philadel­phia scored three power-play goals, and Steve Ma­son made 46 saves to beat Pitts­burgh.

Jakub Vo­racek, Bray­den Schenn and Michael Del Zotto all scored with the man-ad­van­tage, and Ryan White also had a goal for the Fly­ers.

Philadel­phia, which is elim­i­nated from play­off con­tention, com­pleted a sea­son sweep of its Penn­syl­va­nia state ri­val.

Else­where, Carey Price stopped 24 shots to pick up his league-lead­ing 42nd win and To­mas Plekanec scored his 200th ca­reer goal as Mon­treal beat Florida 4-1.

Olli Joki­nen and David Backes scored in the sec­ond pe­riod as St. Louis beat Chicago 2-1 to move into first place in the Cen­tral Di­vi­sion.
