HTC edges Sam­sung, tops smart­phone mar­ket: IDC

HTC Corp. ( ) 14.6 per­cent, Ap­ple Inc. 14.3 per­cent and Sony Mo­bile 11.0 per­cent, IDC’s statis­tics showed.

In 2013, Sam­sung topped the Tai­wan mar­ket with a 28.1 per­cent share, fol­lowed by HTC with 20.5 per­cent, Sony Mo­bile with 15.5 per­cent, Ap­ple with 13.1 per­cent and LG Elec­tron­ics Inc. with 2.6 per­cent.

In the fourth quar­ter of 2014, Ap­ple took the Tai­wan mar­ket by storm with the launch of its iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, grab­bing a dom­i­nant 32 per­cent share of the mar­ket in the last three months of the year. Asustek was a dis­tant sec­ond with an 18 per­cent share in the fourth quar­ter, fol­lowed by HTC with 15 per­cent, Sam­sung with 14 per­cent and Sony Mo­bile with 8 per­cent.

For the whole of 2014, ph­ablets — smartphones and voice call-en­abled tablets be­tween 5.5 and 7 inches in size — ac­counted for 31 per­cent of Tai­wan’s to­tal smart­phone ship­ments, jump­ing from 12 per­cent in 2013.

Sam­sung took more than 80 per­cent of ph­ablet ship­ments in Tai­wan 2013, but its share plunged to 33 per­cent last year. HTC, in sec­ond place, held a 19 per­cent share of Tai­wan’s ph­ablet mar­ket in 2014, while Ap­ple was third with 17 per­cent.
