HTC edges Samsung, tops smartphone market: IDC
HTC Corp. ( ) 14.6 percent, Apple Inc. 14.3 percent and Sony Mobile 11.0 percent, IDC’s statistics showed.
In 2013, Samsung topped the Taiwan market with a 28.1 percent share, followed by HTC with 20.5 percent, Sony Mobile with 15.5 percent, Apple with 13.1 percent and LG Electronics Inc. with 2.6 percent.
In the fourth quarter of 2014, Apple took the Taiwan market by storm with the launch of its iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, grabbing a dominant 32 percent share of the market in the last three months of the year. Asustek was a distant second with an 18 percent share in the fourth quarter, followed by HTC with 15 percent, Samsung with 14 percent and Sony Mobile with 8 percent.
For the whole of 2014, phablets — smartphones and voice call-enabled tablets between 5.5 and 7 inches in size — accounted for 31 percent of Taiwan’s total smartphone shipments, jumping from 12 percent in 2013.
Samsung took more than 80 percent of phablet shipments in Taiwan 2013, but its share plunged to 33 percent last year. HTC, in second place, held a 19 percent share of Taiwan’s phablet market in 2014, while Apple was third with 17 percent.
