HTC share rebounds slightly in US smartphone market: survey
Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC Corp. ( ) saw its market share in the United States rebound slightly in the three months ending in February, underlining its first gain in more than two years.
The Taoyuan- based company was ranked the fifth-largest smartphone vendor in the U.S. with a 3.8-percent share between December and February, up 0.1 of a percentage point from the September- November period, according to a report published April 9 by market research firm comScore Inc.
It was HTC’s first gain over a three-month period since comScore released U.S. smartphone market share figures regularly from the July-September period of 2012, when HTC had a market share of 12.0 percent.
Apple Inc. remained the top smartphone vendor in its home market, but its share dropped by 0.1 of a percentage point to 41.7 percent in the three months ending in February, while secondplace Samsung Electronics Co. fell 1.1 percentage points to 28.6 percent.
LG Electronics Inc. was a distant third, with its market share expanding by 0.7 of a percentage point to 8.3 percent, followed by Motorola Mobility in fourth with a 5.1 percent share, comScore said.
In the December- February period, a total of 186.3 million U.S. residents over the age of 13 owned smartphones, accounting for 76.6 percent of all mobile phone subscribers in the country, the online research company said.
