HTC share re­bounds slightly in US smart­phone mar­ket: sur­vey

Tai­wanese smart­phone maker HTC Corp. ( ) saw its mar­ket share in the United States re­bound slightly in the three months end­ing in Fe­bru­ary, un­der­lin­ing its first gain in more than two years.

The Taoyuan- based com­pany was ranked the fifth-largest smart­phone ven­dor in the U.S. with a 3.8-per­cent share be­tween De­cem­ber and Fe­bru­ary, up 0.1 of a per­cent­age point from the Septem­ber- Novem­ber pe­riod, ac­cord­ing to a re­port pub­lished April 9 by mar­ket re­search firm comS­core Inc.

It was HTC’s first gain over a three-month pe­riod since comS­core re­leased U.S. smart­phone mar­ket share fig­ures reg­u­larly from the July-Septem­ber pe­riod of 2012, when HTC had a mar­ket share of 12.0 per­cent.

Ap­ple Inc. re­mained the top smart­phone ven­dor in its home mar­ket, but its share dropped by 0.1 of a per­cent­age point to 41.7 per­cent in the three months end­ing in Fe­bru­ary, while sec­ond­place Sam­sung Elec­tron­ics Co. fell 1.1 per­cent­age points to 28.6 per­cent.

LG Elec­tron­ics Inc. was a dis­tant third, with its mar­ket share ex­pand­ing by 0.7 of a per­cent­age point to 8.3 per­cent, fol­lowed by Mo­torola Mo­bil­ity in fourth with a 5.1 per­cent share, comS­core said.

In the De­cem­ber- Fe­bru­ary pe­riod, a to­tal of 186.3 mil­lion U.S. res­i­dents over the age of 13 owned smartphones, ac­count­ing for 76.6 per­cent of all mo­bile phone sub­scribers in the coun­try, the on­line re­search com­pany said.
