A raised transformer box exploded, causing one death and one injury in Xinzhuang. “Power transformer boxes are elevated and built too close to homes here. I am constantly afraid that something horrible might happen. They should be moved or constructed underground for health and safety reasons,” said a local resident, whose 5th- floor apartment is near an elevated transformer box built just outside the window.

Power transformer boxes built on elevated platforms separated by less than half a meter’s distance from balconies or windows of homes can be commonly seen in Xinzhuang District. Residents complain that this is extremely dangerous, and that in order to have the transformer units moved, they have to file an application with Taipower and pay a costly construction fee.

Residents expressed their fear that unless Taipower agrees to move all elevated power t ransformer boxes, explosions are likely to occur when earthquakes, lighting strikes or strong storms occur.

With yesterday’s incident alerting press attention, Xinzhuang residents called on the New Taipei City Government to put pressure on Taipower to move the transformer boxes as soon as possible.
