Tai­wan team wins World Cheer­lead­ing Cham­pi­onships

A team from Tai­wan has won a gold medal at the 2015 World Cheer­lead­ing Cham­pi­onships, the first by a Tai­wanese group in a ma­jor in­ter­na­tional cheer­lead­ing tour­na­ment.

The team of around 20 young men and women won the Coed Pre­mier event of the cham­pi­onships at the Walt Dis­ney World Re­sort in Or­lando, Florida on Thurs­day, beat­ing teams from the United States, Fin­land and seven other coun­tries.

Tai­wanese teams also fin­ished sev­enth in the Freestyle Pom Dou­bles event, 12th in the Hip Hop Dou­bles event, 11th in the Team Cheer Freestyle Pom event and ninth in the Team Cheer Hip Hop event.

Ac­cord­ing to the Chi­nese Taipei Cheer­lead­ing As­so­ci­a­tion (CTCA), Tai­wan has par­tic­i­pated in the Coed Pre­mier event ev­ery year since 2010.

Tai­wanese teams won a Coed Pre­mier bronze medal in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and brought home a sil­ver medal in 2013 and 2014, the as­so­ci­a­tion said.

“Its like a dream!” said Lai Hungt­ing, a cheer­leader on the gold medal-win­ning team who has taken part in the com­pe­ti­tion four times.

CTCA Sec­re­tary Gen­eral Liao Chih-hua said that while the Tai­wanese team’s per­for­mance was not per­fect, the cheer­lead­ers held up un­der pres­sure and im­pro­vised when needed.
