Taiwan team wins World Cheerleading Championships
A team from Taiwan has won a gold medal at the 2015 World Cheerleading Championships, the first by a Taiwanese group in a major international cheerleading tournament.
The team of around 20 young men and women won the Coed Premier event of the championships at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida on Thursday, beating teams from the United States, Finland and seven other countries.
Taiwanese teams also finished seventh in the Freestyle Pom Doubles event, 12th in the Hip Hop Doubles event, 11th in the Team Cheer Freestyle Pom event and ninth in the Team Cheer Hip Hop event.
According to the Chinese Taipei Cheerleading Association (CTCA), Taiwan has participated in the Coed Premier event every year since 2010.
Taiwanese teams won a Coed Premier bronze medal in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and brought home a silver medal in 2013 and 2014, the association said.
“Its like a dream!” said Lai Hungting, a cheerleader on the gold medal-winning team who has taken part in the competition four times.
CTCA Secretary General Liao Chih-hua said that while the Taiwanese team’s performance was not perfect, the cheerleaders held up under pressure and improvised when needed.
