Court up­holds 22-year jail term for kid­nap­per group

The Thai supreme court yes­ter­day up­held a 22- year im­pris­on­ment given to six peo­ple ac­cused of kid­nap­ping a 36-year-old Tai­wanese mil­lion­aire for 30 mil­lion baht (US$900,000) ran­som in 2009.

The Court of Ap­peals found the six de­fen­dants — Thai na­tion­als Aumpon Sae-whang, Sarawuth Sae-yhang, Sa­mut Yangy­ing, and Chi­nese na­tion­als Chen Zi Wen, Zhang Za Lun and Ching Chang — guilty of kid­nap­ping tex­tile en­tre­pre­neur Ten Li-wei and gave each of them a 22-year pri­son term.

Ac­cord­ing to wit­ness, the vic­tim was ab­ducted by th­ese gang­sters who claimed to be po­lice of­fi­cers.
